Planet Essay Competition
We are extremely pleased to be able to announce the result of the Planet Essay competition. The overall prize of £300 was won by David Greenslade with his essay A Maze of Muck and Murder, on the complicated relationship between nations in the region bordering the Black Sea, while the under-30s prize of £200 was won by Huw David Jones for his essay War Declared! Art and Society in Wales 1966-77. There was sharp competition in both categories, the under-30s excelling in the polemical essay about contemporary events, whether about feminism, the Welsh language or the dangerous distaste for Parliamentary politics endemic in our society at present; while writers in the overall category preferred well-researched, well-referenced articles on a wide range of subjects. Ironically, the two winners are each representative of the weight of contributions in the other category. We’d like to thank all the writers taking part for making it such an interesting and enjoyable competition to judge, and hope our readers enjoy the winning contributions — both found in this issue of Planet — as much as we did.
