On the face of it, these two books seem broadly similar: fantasy fiction aimed at a YA readership and drawing on Welsh tradition. In fact, they are quite different from one another, not only in medium (one written in Welsh, the other in English), but also in tone, scope and ambition.

Simon Rodway is a senior lecturer in the Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies at Aberystwyth University, specialising in medieval Welsh and Irish language and literature. He also writes Welsh-medium fantasy novels for teenagers and sings with hillbilly pop band The Hittites.
