Editorial
From Planet 225

by Emily Trahair

A Planet subscriber reading this issue on a trans-Atlantic flight home from the US is likely not to enjoy their journey: this edition is queasy with dystopian visions of both America and Wales. Looking down after lift-off they might imagine they can make out desert graves in no-man’s land, drone-testing sites, flyover cities in peacetime ruins, entire mountaintops removed… The lights below don’t glitter in the magnificent way our reader imagined they might. For the Left and liberals alike, the sense of promise, rebellion and counter-cultural spangle the US might have represented appears tarnished at least: seemingly interminable neo-imperial war abroad, the election of Donald Trump, and progressive forces now so estranged along class and cultural lines, and weary from fighting each other online, that they would struggle to unite against Trump’s Far Right populism.
