The Foreword to the ‘Cartographic Imaginaries’ exhibition – part of the Literary Atlas of Wales project – affirms that humans are not just social, but spatial beings. The twelve artworks are a meditation on this spatial experience of Wales, exploring place and its multiple, mutable meanings. Yet, as ‘literary atlas’ suggests, what is equally significant is the interplay between fiction and visual art. The project pairs twelve significant Welsh novels in English with a visual artist, asking them to respond creatively to the story and its setting. The result is an astounding, intricate, and multi-layered series of works that pay tribute to the complexity of both the novelists’ and the artists’ vision.
