Welsh Keywords: Dwyieithrwydd

From Planet 228

by Meg Elis

This is the twenty-fourth contribution to our Welsh Keywords series – inspired by Raymond Williams’ Keywords – which offers contemporary perspectives on contested meanings of words in Welsh and how these shifting meanings continue to shape our society.

The earliest mention of the word dwyieithrwydd (bilingualism) in the Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru (University of Wales Dictionary) is only in 1938, and the earliest mention of dwyieithog is in 1831.
