Until now we’ve been travelling along the western end of the M4 corridor, with its out-of-town retail estates and electricity pylons marching majestically across the fields. We could be anywhere in Britain, because these in-between places look much the same wherever you go. Wind turbines spin on every hilltop, trackside buddleias grow along the sidings and sheep may safely graze in the shade of solar panels.
