Take a walk along the old railway track from Aberdare up Cwm Dâr. It’s a quiet rural stroll to lakes and a view of the glacial bowl at the valley’s head. But all along the way there are scattered traces of a very different environment – what was, 150 years ago, an industrial Pandemonium. You can’t make sense of this landscape without knowing about the explosive growth of the coal industry, about the valley’s forty pits and the millions of tons of coal exported from it annually, and about its transformation into the Dare Valley Country Park.
